The Operator's Trap

Randy Clinkscale · 2026-08-29

Sometimes the problem isn't the answer. It's the question.

Operators naturally ask: what should we do? CFO thinking adds another question: what happens because we do it?

That second question changes things.

  • The big new customer looks different when you consider concentration risk
  • The new hires look different when you consider the permanent cost structure
  • The expansion looks different when you ask whether you're actually creating value — or simply making the company bigger

Expansion can create complexity faster than value. The decision you make today often carries consequences you won't see until tomorrow.

Good decisions aren't just about what happens next. They're about what happens after what happens next.

That's why CFO thinking isn't simply about numbers. It's about seeing the second- and third-order effects of a decision before they arrive.

Before your next major decision, ask: if we say yes to this today, what are we also saying yes to tomorrow?
